Every patrol depends on skills that need regular practice: navigating the terrain, recognising wildlife signs, recording findings, and helping a colleague when an accident occurs. For Wildlife Protection Teams (WPTs), this readiness is an essential part of protecting forests and wildlife in the Leuser Ecosystem.
From 5 to 12 August 2026, Forum Konservasi Leuser (FKL) held its annual WPT evaluation and refresher training at the Amanah Training Center in Aceh Besar. The programme ran in two groups, on 5–8 and 9–12 August, so personnel could remain available in each region while their colleagues attended training.
The event brought together teams from Region I in Langsa, Region II in Kutacane, and Region III in Tapaktuan. A total of 336 people were involved, including trainees, organisers, management, invited guests, and trainers. Trainees included FKL SMART patrol personnel, personnel from Gunung Leuser National Park (TNGL) and Forest Management Units (KPH), the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS) team, and security teams.
